CHET provides Commission of Inquiry with much-needed evidence

Director of the Centre for Higher Education Trust (CHET) Dr Nico Cloete on Thursday 11 August 2016 made a presentation to the Commission of Inquiry into the Higher Education and Training (the 'Fees Commission'). The Fees Commission was initiated by President Jacob Zuma to consider the feasibility of free higher education following last year’s #FeesMustFall country-wide shutdown of South African universities by students.

Cloete said it was important to look at political contestations around higher education, the dangers of delinking transformation from development, the functioning and structure of the higher education sector, levels of investment in higher education, the trilemma of trade-offs inherent in such investment, who benefits from university subsidies, a differentiated fees structure and the need for a pact on the contribution of higher education to society.

The Commission responded to the presentation by welcoming an evidenced-based overview of the constellation of challenges facing South African higher education.
