The Association of African Universities (AAU) is happy to announce the appointment of Professor Goolam Mohamedbhai, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mauritius, as the new Secretary General of the Association of African Universities. The appointment takes effect on 1st August 2008. Professor Goolam Mohamedbhai, a citizen of Mauritius, was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mauritius for ten years, having risen through the ranks from lecturer in 1972. He obtained BSc (1st Class Hons) and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the
University of Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1967 and 1971, respectively. He is the author of many publications pertaining to issues of higher education in Africa, in particular, quality assurance, internationalization, information and communication, globalization and its implications, to mention a few.

Prof. Mohamedbhai, currently President of the International Association of Universities, is the recipient of many awards, including Honorary Doctorates from the Institute of Business Management, Karachi, Pakistan and Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania in 2006. He also received the Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean National Award from the President of Mauritius, in recognition of his distinguished services in the field of higher education.
