DESCRIPTION

The student movement in South Africa faces the challenge of redefining its role in the current context of both the new order in South Africa and emergence of a networked global community. This necessitates a review of SRC constitutions in light of the new SA constitution, the Higher Education Act and the various institutional statutes.

SRCs are required to transform from being simply representative structures to becoming a combination of student government as well as a key role player in institutional co-operative governance.

Effective Student Governance aims to facilitate these transformatory processes by:

  • Being a resource for student leaders who need to know more about constitutional issues of governance for student bodies.
  • Providing reference material on which to base the writing of a new constitution.
  • Offering support on the various roles and responsibilities of the office bearers of the SRCs.
  • Acting as a resource for student organisations and officials and practitioners in higher education.
